Teddy Daniels: a U.S. Marshal. Teddy lost his wife two years ago, to a fire set by Andrew Laeddis. Teddy has taken the Shutter Island case, because Laeddis is a patient at Ashecliffe, and Teddy wants to avenge his wife. Teddy suffers from seasickness and severe migraines. At the end of the novel, it is revealed that Teddy is actually Andrew Laeddis. He killed his wife, and created Teddy Daniels so he wouldn't have to deal with the fact that he killed his wife.
Chuck Aule: another U.S. Marshal, Teddy Daniels' partner. Chuck was sent to Boston from Seattle. He has a Japanese girlfriend, and in post-WWII, his area looks down on that. He moved to Boston to get away from the dissaproval of his girlfriend. Chuck is a funny guy, and an excellent poker player. He's always got Teddy's back. At the end of the novel, it is revealed that Chuck is actually the missing Doctor Sheehan. Teddy made Doctor Sheehan as Chuck, his partner, in his fictional past.
Doctor Cawley: head doctor on the island. Cawley lives in a lavish house on the island. He is opposed to the traditional method of phsycology, as well as the new method. He is opposed to physcial treatment, as well as drugs. He believes that if you talk and listen to a patient, you can get through to them. Throughout the novel, Teddy believes he is using Nazi-inspired brain surgery to create minions. At the end, it is revealed that Cawley needs Teddy to be cured, or he needs to be put down.
